“From Leake to Etowah” Tour Cartersville’s Native American Past
Bartow County’s Native American past extends back thousands of years. Recent archaeological investigations occurred on land occupied by American Indians from approximately 300 BC to AD 650. This site, called the Leake Site, extended along the Etowah River southwest of Cartersville, and served as an economic and cultural center for societies throughout the Southeastern and Midwestern United States. Two miles to the east, the Etowah Indian Mounds, the most intact Mississippian Culture site in the Southeast, was occupied from approximately AD 1000 to 1550. This site includes six earthen mounds, a plaza, village site, borrow pits, and a defensive ditch.
In conjunction with the Bartow History Museum’s current feature exhibition, “Pieces of the Past: Bartow’s Leake Site,” join us for a special tour of the Leake site, the Etowah Indian Mounds, and the Bartow History Museum, on Saturday, November 2, 2013. The tour will give participants an in depth look at both Native American sites, illustrating the differences and similarities in the two societies separated by hundreds of years. Participants will also get a firsthand look at the artifacts recovered from the recent archaeological excavations at the Leake site.
The tour will depart from Bartow History Museum at 8:30 a.m. Upon returning to the Museum for a look at the Leake exhibit and artifacts, participants will enjoy lunch and fellowship. The event will conclude around 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $20 and include transportation, lunch, admission fees, and a special gift. Tickets can be purchased in the Bartow History Museum Gift Shop or by calling 770-387-2774. Visit www.bartowhistorymuseum.org for more information.
